Kathy is a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 6 years of experience in General Medicine specializing in primary care, health prevention and promotion, women’s health, and mental health. She sees a range of clients across the age span for primary care from infant to geriatric and ages 5 to geriatric for mental health issues.
Edwards is originally from the New Orleans area but moved to North Dakota in the early 1990’s with her husband for his job. There she pursued her nursing education, obtaining her BSN from Minot State University, then her MSN and certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2005 at the University of North Dakota. Just after graduation, she began practice in an acute care holistic independent practice with a physician and another nurse practitioner who specialized in woman’s health and cardiac issues. While working with her colleagues, Kathy decided to pursue her Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health Certificate part-time at the University of North Dakota related to the shortage of mental health providers in the state at that time. However, she was forced to withdraw from school, focusing her attention on her three young children because of family issues in her last semester, unable to obtain the CNS certification she had originally pursued.
Kathy was, however, able to open a private practice which flourished where she saw clients for general practice as well as mental health issues, with the standard of care enabling her clients to keep their care with one provider, at one location, without having to seek out a number of specialists for most services.
This includes medication management for primary care and mental health issues.
Edwards and her children moved to Helena about 8 years ago when she took a position with VA Montana, Behavioral Health, believing she had realized her dream to help veterans find hope for their mental health issues. However, due to the extreme turnover rate in that department with the retirement of the Chief of Staff just after hiring Edwards, she found it impossible to remain in her position as Crisis Nurse Practitioner after serving her veterans after only 9 months. Edwards loving living in Helena, decided to obtain her Montana license and set up a new private practice at this wonderful facility interested in restoring health to people of Helena having mental and physical issues. She now has 14 years experience in her chose field.
